Get More Out of the Bible

Key Bible Verse: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15, NKJV)

Dig Deeper: Psalm 119:97-104

The Bible tells us to “be diligent” [about] “rightly dividing the word of truth” (today’s Key Bible Verse). The phrase rightly dividing means “dissecting correctly.”

Do you believe that Jesus Christ is God? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to get to the Father? Do you believe God wants to reveal his will for you? Unfortunately, many Christians can’t answer these questions with intelligent, scriptural responses.

One reason for this is that often we do not read the Bible intelligently. Many times we read, but we fail to understand what is being said in the larger context. We have no idea who is speaking, nor do we know the circumstances surrounding the passage.

For instance, if you read about the various animal sacrifices in the Old Testament, you might become confused if you didn’t have a basic understanding of the New Testament. If it were me, I might conclude that the best way to approach God is to sacrifice an animal. However, with an understanding of the New Testament, I realize that the sacrificial system foreshadowed what Jesus would do on the cross and is no longer necessary.
