Key Bible Verse: “Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!” (John 17:24)
Dig Deeper: John 17:20-26
Jonathan Edwards presents the ultimate love of Father and Son and Spirit as what makes God what God is: love. When discussing what the saints will experience when they enter heaven, Edwards said this: “They shall see in God everything that gratifies love.” That is as deep a sentence as you may ever read.
Edwards continued: “They shall see in him all that love desires. Love desires the love of the beloved. So the saints in glory shall see God’s transcendent love to them; God will make ineffable (indescribable) manifestations of his love to them.” then the Puritan theologian takes us to the edge of human experience: “They shall see as much love in God towards them as they desire; they neither will nor can crave anymore.”
In heaven our desires will be perfected yet capable of ever more perfection. The perfected pleasure of heaven will be to gaze on the face of God, to enjoy the beauty of our Father, and to dwell in the spirit alongside our brother, the Lord Jesus, as we find our desires consumed by love of God and love of one another. “Love,” Edwards stated, “desires union.” The final heaven is all about the insatiable pleasure of that union.
