A Call to Community

Key Bible Verse: God has put the body together, giving greater honour to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. (1 Corinthians 12:24-25)

Dig Deeper: 1 Corinthians 12:12-26

As responsible members of a community, we are accountable to one another. Accountability is often narrowly understood in Christian circles. We talk about “accountability partners” but usually mean we want someone to keep an eye on us and call us to account when we fail. The best form of accountability is when we come alongside one another to embrace our mission and fulfill our responsibility. We don’t simply provide performance feedback. We also provide resources and enter into a relationship so that together we can achieve a goal.

[Pursuing community] means making a commitment to a different kind of life characterized by mutual submission, encouragement, and accountability. It means fostering a culture of humility and service in which each member eagerly picks up a towel, uses it [to serve], and then surrenders it back to the community in a spirit of self-sacrifice, not self-preservation. Let us work together in the name of Jesus, co-labourers in the kingdom of God. And let us help one another persevere.
