Being Light

Key Bible Verse: “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.” (Isaiah 60:1)

Dig Deeper: 2 Corinthians 2:14-16

As the light of the world, we must reflect the light of God, but we also must absorb the light of his presence and teaching so that we can emit a light that is truly ours and not just a surface reflection of faith. Too often people learn the language of faith, even the traditions, but they are not fully absorbing and synthesizing the power of the light. [On the other hand,] we cannot simply absorb the love and light of God and fail to reflect and emit that light to the world around us.

Many spend time [simply absorbing light by] studying the Word of God, attending church services, perhaps meeting with small groups to discuss God’s truth or listening to experts describe the many aspects of our faith. Yet, we are [also] born to be conduits of light and life.

Photosynthesis is a complex natural process that involves more than a plant simply reflecting the light of the sun. Plants must absorb sunlight and synthesize it before they give off oxygen, which is a nutrient for other life forms. In a comparable way, we followers of Christ must learn to absorb all the light that God has for us so that we can reflect some, retain some, and emit some.

We were born to absorb and then reflect God’s light.
