a-love-that-overcomes-fear

Key Bible Verse: [The LORD] lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. (Psalm 40:2)

Dig Deeper: Psalm 40

Have you ever experienced God’s unconditional love becoming unmistakably real? Just before I was released from prison, I had lost hope. I did not believe I would ever get out. My heart was empty; I had no faith that my situation would ever change. However, on March 16, 1997, I was set free. Just like that, I was let go. I knew in that moment, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I had experienced the love of God in a dramatic way. It was an emphatic word from God that he loves me.

Although I do not wish the traumatic experience of being imprisoned on anyone, I do long for people to experience the love of God. There are innumerable ways that God communicates his love to us, but sometimes it takes radical experiences for us to be convinced of just how strongly he feels about us.

I do not ever want to go back to prison, but more than that, I do not ever want to forget what I learned there. That experience helped me see a clearer picture of God. In the days, months, and years that followed, I only became more certain of God’s beauty and greatness, and more overwhelmed by his love for me.
