Cleansing and Reviving

Key Bible Verse: “But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.” (Malachi 4:2)

Dig Deeper:

After Jesus’ wilderness temptation, he launches his ministry—and he ministers in power. We see Jesus everywhere setting things right, back the way they’re supposed to be. The sick are healed, captives are released, demons are cast out, and the blind can see. Jesus refuses to participate in the corruption we unleash, and unleashes instead the power of God’s kingdom.

Jesus goes everywhere, “proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” Jesus brings God’s life-giving, vibrant power—like spots of green grass growing afresh on a dead and dried-up summer lawn—into a dry and thirsty land. Everything Jesus touches comes back to life through love.

Jesus pours out the love of God, intending to fill the world with it. Jesus is true humanity, and he can’t get spiritually dirty. Not because he’s backing away from our mess, but because as he dives into it, it cannot corrupt him. Not because he’s unwilling to step into our pain and brokenness, but because as he jumps in, he brings healing and restoration with him. Jesus’ movement is toward the muck of the world, willing to fully enter our filth and grime, but our sin can’t taint his soul. Because you can’t get Jesus dirty; he can only make you clean.
