Conformed to His Image

Why the Resurrection Matters

Key Bible Verse: And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18, NIV)

Dig Deeper: 2 Corinthians 3: 7-18

After the fall of Adam and Eve into sin, human beings are still considered to be created in the image of God (Gen. 9:6). Sin has marred the ability of human beings to function as God’s images or representatives. Rather than showcasing God’s glory, fallen human beings have exchanged it for false worship, impurity, and lies (Rom. 1:21-25).

Into this desperate situation, God sent his Son, Jesus. Colossians 1:15 calls Jesus “the image of the invisible God” (NIV; also 2 Cor. 4:4). Jesus is the one who perfectly represented God during his life here on earth, glorifying God by putting God’s love, power, wisdom, mercy, compassion, and justice on display.

The story gets even more wonderful, though. God’s Spirit is currently at work in the lives of Christ’s followers, transforming them to be like him (See Key Bible Verse). According to Romans 8:29, God’s plan is for his children to be conformed to the image of his Son, Jesus! This goal will be realized when we are raised to life in spiritual, imperishable bodies like the body of the man from heaven – the resurrected Christ. Then, as we live life in the new earth in these resurrected bodies, we will perfectly represent God by putting his character qualities on display.
