Consequences of Sin

Key Bible Verse: “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:7, NIV)

Dig Deeper:

[Mike and Julie] came to see me [after he discovered she had been having an affair with a coworker]. After a couple months of counselling Mike found out that Julie was still spending time with her coworker at his apartment. When confronted, Julie angrily informed Mike that she didn’t want to be married anymore, had already rented her own apartment and planned to move out. Mike was devastated.

As their divorce played out, Mike had to sell their home, find a new place to live, and get their children into counselling to help them cope. But God’s wrath in the matter was clearly reserved for her. Julie and her future husband [were] fired when their boss found out about the affair, because their work contract had a morality clause. Julie’s new marriage ended in divorce as well. God was incredibly patient with Julie in all this, giving her ample opportunity to turn things around with Mike and her children. After she refused to change her ways, the wrath of God came down hard, all because she put personal happiness ahead of loving and obeying God.

When God gives us time to repent and we decide not to, we can be sure that his righteous anger is coming our way. When the hammer comes down, we can’t say that God didn’t warn us.
