When our family moved into our home in Los Angeles County, I was excited to meet our new neighbours. As we unpacked our boxes, I fulled expected at any minute they would knock at our front door with a housewarming gift. Day after day, the number of boxes to unpack diminished, yet we heard no knock at the door. I was saddened and surprised. Perhaps I was also naive.
Voicing my disappointment to my wife, Debbie, she came up with a brilliant idea: we would bake cookies and take them to our neighbours. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we would start acting the way we had expected our neighbours to act. Isn’t there a passage in the Bible where Jesus challenges us to do to others as we would have them do to us?
The next day, we set off to meet our neighbours. As odd as we may have looked as we ventured out as strangers with gifts of homemade cookies, I have to admit we were hard to resist [continued 12/13].
