The Mercy of Trials

Key Bible Verse: “We bring nothing at birth; we take nothing with us at death. The Lord alone gives and takes. Praise the name of the LORD!” (Job 1:21, CEV)

Dig Deeper: Job 1

[In 2007, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.] While I used to feel free to run from one stage of life to the next, I was now feeling held back. All of a sudden it felt like there was a dark cloud over my mind and an anchor tied to my soul, pulling me down with ill intent. It sounds dramatic, I know, but it’s how I felt. My energy was gone, and all that remained was a feeling of emptiness. I wasn’t ready for my energy to be taken, but God was ready to take it.

There are mercies from God that we are too confident will always remain. Often we think new mercies are automatic and should be expected, like the click we hear when we lock our car doors. God’s mercies are indeed new each morning, but we shouldn’t assume he’ll grant us the same ones he gave us yesterday.

Every single breath, every solitary heartbeat, every ounce of energy is its own individual gift from God. And while he delights to give us those gifts, he’s never obligated to continue. Be grateful for the numerous kindnesses the Lord has thrown your way.
