Key Bible Verse: He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” (Matthew 9:37-38)
Dig Deeper: Matthew 9:35-38; Ephesians 6:18-20
I have found that the most powerful prayers to help unbelievers are oriented around praying that God would bring believers into their lives to testify about him. While other people may have had a different experience when asking God to produce faith in people, I have found that our Lord won’t override the rebellious heart to force faith into an unbeliever, no matter how many years I beg him to do so. He will, however, command a believer to go to that person and to testify with power that may break through the unbeliever’s lack of faith.
If you have persevered in prayer for a loved one to come to faith, I’m right there with you and don’t think you should give up. Just make sure you are praying for God to reveal himself to him or her by calling many believers to join you in testifying about Jesus.
Note that in his final recorded prayer, Jesus said, “I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours” (John 17:9, NIV). In praying specific prayers, we should focus on prayers asking God to empower his followers to accomplish Christ’s mission.
