Forget Normal

Being Light

Key Bible Verse: But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, [a] holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9, AKJV)

Dig Deeper: 1 Peter 2:9-12

Normal is overrated! Normal people rarely shape history.

It was not “normal” for a leader to call for revolutionary change yet demand that non-violence be the vehicle to bring that change. It was not normal for a preacher to focus on God’s love and forgiveness so relentlessly that thousands packed stadiums to hear his words of hope. Both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham were not “normal” men; they refused to rely on others’ views of normal behaviour and instead reflected a light that cut through the darkness of prejudice and separation from God and brought new promise.

The pursuit of normal is like chasing the wind. The moment you are sure you have settled into the fleeting comfort that comes with normalcy, a “thought leader” will reveal a “new normal” to which you will be asked to conform. But there is nothing normal about light. It defies definition and refuses to be confined. People of the light must resist the “normal” and aspire to the extraordinary, the transformational.
