Key Bible Verse: Christ has set us free! This means we are really free. Now hold on to your freedom and don’t ever become slaves of the law again. (Galatians 5:1, CEV)
Dig Deeper: Galatians 5:1-6
Most of us learn how to manage our hearts [in order to fit] in society. With desperate and determined striving, we make our mark on society. We cultivate a career, perhaps we establish a marriage and family, and we accumulate nice things and obey the rules while pretending that all is well with our heart. But our life of pretending isn’t enough for our heart to live on.
What would occur in your life if you allowed your longings to open up in a more pure and transparent way so they could be healed and redirected? What difference would it make if there were a radical and ongoing shift within your soul’s operational system – a shift away from the frantic striving to achieve intimacy with God toward simply opening yourself to receive God’s gift of intimacy?
The changes would be considerable if your attention shifted away from what you feel you must do to what God has already accomplished. Too many people are accustomed to feeling the crushing weight of bondage, duty, and obligation while God wants to give them freedom. Religion produces horrendous feelings of shame and despair, but God’s gift of grace is intended to produce a much different kind of fruit – rest.
