Key Bible Verse: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7, NIV)
Dig Deeper: Philippians 4:4-7
In [Matt. 6:26-30], Jesus begins by pointing to the birds of the air. They don’t have a huge warehouse where they store worms in bulk. Birds don’t have pantries or a second freezer in their garages to store more food. No, they take what they need for the day, living from one day to the next with no sense of worry about their food. God takes care of them. Then Jesus diverts our attention from birds to flowers — flowers that Jesus tells us don’t “labour or spin,” and yet they are more glorious than the richest king ever — King Solomon. How does this happen? They’re rooted in rich soil and receive rain and warm sunshine, all provided by a loving, gracious God without a single concern on their part.
Now, if God can take care of birds that live from day to day and flowers that exist in complete confidence in God’s provision, how much more will God take care of us, who are made in his image and of more value than birds and flowers?
You know what God is saying here? You matter to him. God. Cares. So when you find yourself starting to tense up over sudden and unexpected news, remember that our pathway to a transcendent calm and an otherworldly peace is to feast on the truth of God’s care.
