Key Bible Verse: The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. (Psalm 25:8-9)
Dig Deeper: Psalm 25:4-10
One time [when] my buddy and I were sitting around jamming some jazz standards together [I asked,] “What have you been prayin’ about lately?”
So he was like, “Lately I’ve just been praying that God will humble me, you know?”
That is not a prayer you want to pray unless you’re deadly serious. Here’s why: God answers prayer. But here’s the deal: you can’t go from proud to humble in a moment. The only way to get from proud to humble is by walking a long path. It happens whenever God allows us to experience a situation that is humbling, and then we allow ourselves to be taught and disciplined and transformed by that situation. Then God allows us to repeat that, over and over and over, until a sapling of humility starts to take root in our hard hearts.
My friend was praying for a good thing, and he was praying to a God who loves to answer his kid’s prayers. If humility was something he truly wanted, God was going to give it to him, and my friend would certainly come out the other side as a person closer to the heart of Jesus. Closer to a disciple. We are meant to learn from Jesus and be his student as we walk with him through the mess.
