Key Bible Verse: How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. (Psalm 36:7-8, NIV)
Dig Deeper: Psalm 36:5-10
God dwells in endless pleasure and happiness and in deep joy. Our desire for deep joy comes from God’s deep dwelling in God’s own deep joy.
Heaven is a world of happiness, a world of intense pleasures, a world of deep joy. Heaven is designed for people who yearn for that kind of happiness, pleasure, and deep joy. I’ll say it: the thrills of intimate relationships among friends and family and societies, the sensual pleasures of orgasm, the inexpressible delight of perfectly pitched music for the perfect moment, the rich fullness of a rose’s fragrance enhanced by wafts of freshly mowed grass, the sensory touches of skin and shape and form, the glories of a sunset, the intense satisfactions of great food and wine, as well as the thrill of victories (Cubs win! Cubs win! Hey, hey!) – all of these point us toward ecstasies we will experience in the new heavens and the new earth.
Life’s pleasures – success at work, a good meal, a beautiful song, satisfying sex, a splendid aroma – are sacraments, yes sacraments, of the new heavens and earth. Heaven is not designed for those who fear joy and pleasure and happiness, nor for those who deny such pleasures. Heaven is designed for those who relish pleasures and long for more.
