Holy Moments

Slow Down There's No Time To Waste

Key Bible Verse: The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. (Psalm 37:23)

Dig Deeper: Psalm 37:3-7, 23-24

We were with friends in the mountains of Colorado for a shared family vacation when our host received a phone call.  It was her sister, a non-Christian in the middle of a painful divorce.  As our friend took the call, the rest of us prayed for the conversation.

More than an hour later, our friend returned.  At first, she told us, the conversation had tiptoed along on the surface. Them, as sometimes happens in the providence of God, it had unexpectedly plunged into a discussion about the things that matter most.  Our friend was able to explore with her sister what it could mean for her to experience the love and acceptance of God in the middle of this relational devastation.

When the conversation [had] entered that deeper level, our friend prayed silently that she would say the right things – enough but not too much, “because” as she said, “those are such fragile and holy moments.”

God visits earth in moments just like that one all the time.  Suddenly an ordinary pocket of time is stretched beyond recognition. As we step into it, we discover it is crammed with divine presence and purpose and potential – a holy and fragile moment.

Years after that conversation, I spoke with the sister at a wedding.  She thanked me for my prayers during that confusing time and told me how God drew her to him in the years that followed.  We were both in tears as she described his transforming power and presence in her life today.
