Key Bible Verse: How can people have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them, if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear, unless someone tells them? (Romans 10:14, CEV)
Dig Deeper: Matthew 9:35-38
Our son, Caleb, was two and starting to say some of the cutest little words. What’s more, Debbie was just starting to waddle as a result of her pregnant belly. We knocked on the doors of about six homes. Every single person was exceedingly warm and grateful and welcoming to us.
A few weeks later, Sonny, one of our new neighbours, revealed to me a reason for that lack of hospitality: Not seeing us move in, he didn’t realize we were new to the neighbourhood. The previous owners were white, like we are. Since there are only about 10 white people in the entire five square blocks, he assumed we were the same people. Sonny went on to explain that the couple who lived in our house before had [built] a large wooden fence around the backyard, unusual in a neighbourhood with only chain-link fences. Plus, they always seemed to hurry in and out of their house. As a result, he was intimidated by them.
The cookies we took to our neighbours represented a tremendous breakthrough, but it was just the beginning. I would purposely mow the lawn, water the grass, and play with the kids in the front yard [when] others would be outside or coming home from work so we could interact with them.
