Living Hope

Why the Resurrection Matters

Key Bible Verse: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (1 Peter 1:3, NIV)

Dig Deeper: 1 Peter 1:3-9

There is a reason for hope, and that reason is the new birth. Since all of us begin life on earth in a spiritually dead condition (Eph. 2:1-3), all of us need this new birth (also called regeneration).

First Peter 1:3 says that the outcome of the new birth is a “living hope.” This was important to the people to whom Peter wrote because they were facing suffering. With the prospect of more pain and suffering ahead of them, they needed the hope of a better future.

The apostle Paul [also] faced suffering, including a trial before religious authorities, because of his hope in the resurrection of the dead (Acts 23:6). He even used future hope to instruct believers about how to grieve when they lost loved ones. Our grief is shaped by the gospel. “We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (v. 14). Thank God for the resurrection of Christ that gives us new birth into this living hope!
