In the Grip of Fear

In 1997, my friend Glenn Murray and I travelled to Iran to explore future service opportunities there. On our return journey, immigration officials separated and interrogated [us]. I remember being led up a flight of stairs into a small, dark room. When I heard the door slam behind me, fear like I had never experienced before took hold of my heart. My interrogators began shouting at me and threatening me. “Why are you here, Mr. Baumann? You will answer us truthfully!”

Every truthful answer I gave provoked more angry intimidation. The men began to kick and slap me. The abuse continued this way for three hours, until I was left alone in shock, shaking uncontrollably from head to toe.

After a few hours, the interrogators led [us] into another building where we were given prison clothes and led down a staircase into separate prison cells. [They] shoved me into a small room and slammed the metal door behind me. Alone in my cell, the reality of my situation began to sink in. Tears filled my eyes, and I prayed, “God, where are you?” [continued on 9/27.]
