Key Bible Verse: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV)
Dig Deeper: Ephesians 4:17-32
Religion is always outside-in, but the gospel goes from the inside out. It is “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27, ESV). A new heart, a new creation, new desires, new loves. Holiness and righteousness have been imputed to you – reborn inside of you – and nothing you do can earn you any more favour than that.
See what this perspective does to your praying, your worship, your quiet time with the Lord? Sure, these things still require a battle of self-discipline, since we remain in the process of learning how to quiet those lazy, deceptive voices inside ourselves. But we’re not seeking God to get [accolades]. We’re seeking him to enjoy even greater intimacy with him, [and] to open more and more of those inner closets we’ve tried to restrict [him from accessing], thinking he might reject us if he knew.
The reason why we study his Word, why we attack our sin, why we share generously from our resources, and why we serve the people around us is not to persuade him to love us. We do these things because he already does love us – and because he wants us to dig even deeper into the treasury of his blessing, into the joy and sweetness and abundant living his gospel unlocks for us.
