Key Bible Verse: “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. (1 Peter 3:18)
Dig Deeper: Hebrews 9:24-28
God really does answer whatever we ask when we pray Jesus is more than an example to be followed; he’s a Saviour to be trusted. This is why we miss the point if we see Jesus wilderness temptation as only how to overcome temptation, with advice like “Jesus used Scripture, so you should too.” This focuses on a flea and misses the elephant in the room. The point is not, “He did it; you can too!” The point is, “You don’t do it; so Jesus did it for you.”
Jesus is succeeding where we failed, living the life we haven’t in order to set the world right and bring us back to God. If we’re united to Jesus, he’s going to gradually make us more like himself. We’ll get better at resisting temptation over time, as we’re formed into his image and shaped by the beauty of his holiness. But this isn’t our starting point; it starts with Jesus.
Jesus is faithful under temptation, even to the point of a cruel and unwarranted death, so that we might live again in him. Jesus finds us in the distant land where we got lost, and lifts us on his back to carry us home.
