Shaping Culture

Key Bible Verse: You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)

Dig Deeper:

Sports, music, art, drama, cooking, building, creating, and countless other manifestations of culture are enjoyed by both Christians and non-Christians. The Christian’s light-work is to point out how his or her appreciation and enjoyment of cultural manifestations of truth, beauty, and goodness point to the glory and grace of God. Culture always begins with God as we can only be culture makers because of his work as Creator. Jesus’ call for us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world means that we should not simply condemn sports culture and withdraw from it and that we should not uncritically absorb sports culture. When we do either, we are hastening cultural decay and darkness and forfeiting Christian distinctiveness.

Rather, Christians should participate in a [cross-centered] engagement with and celebration of sports culture as capable of reflecting the truth, beauty, and goodness of God. When Christians live daily as the salt of the earth and the light of the world, we are liberated in our daily lives to do all—including sports—to the glory of God.
