Spiritual Eclipse

Being Light

Key Bible Verse: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. (Ephesians 5:8, NIV)

Dig Deeper: Ephesians 5:3-14

How does darkness prevent us from reflecting and emitting God’s light? There are many ways, but many of us are simply living in the shade, as though the light of the Son of God is not falling on us. It could be said of us that we are victims of a “spiritual eclipse.”

We all know that sin is the dark body that moves across the sky of our lives. It often grows imperceptibly, and then we find ourselves in the shadows of death, far from God. The Bible says that light has come into the world, but we loved darkness more than light. All of us have some measure of the light (God) that shines in the darkness within us to expose the evil in our hearts and turn us to the light. But we can love our dark ways, and often ignore the gentle pleadings of the Lord and remain in darkness.

Another danger lurks in that if we begin to absorb darkness instead of light that darkness will swallow up our light. Just as surely as we will reflect and emit the light of God when we are near him, we will lose our ability to reflect light when we drift from him and surround ourselves with darkness.
