grace-or-obedience

Key Bible Verse: God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27, HCSB)

Dig Deeper: Colossians 1:19-27

Jesus says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness: (Matt. 6:33). The question is: How can we do that in a way that leads to life instead of in a way that leads to exhaustion and cynicism?

Union with Christ! It enable you to face [the commands of Jesus] with clear-eyed honesty but also with unfettered hope. You can hear the high call of Christ not as a bar to live up to but as an ennobling reality to live into.

This was the very image the apostle Paul drew on when he said, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Phil. 3:12, NIV)

You see? The gap doesn’t defeat Paul. But it doesn’t lead him to passivity either. It inspired him to pursue Christ, who has already taken hold of him. You have been given life by the Author of life; now press on to live more and more into this abundant life. Every life is better with Christ at its center, but that means Christ must become, more and more, the animating center of all you do and say-that’s union with Christ.
