Key Bible Verse: And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. (Ephesians 1:10)
Dig Deeper: Ephesians 1:3-14
Why do we get so frustrated with our political leaders? Why are many of us so dependent on them, their policies, and their keeping promises? It’s because we want someone to fix what we all know is wrong. We want our leaders to usher in the flourishing that we all desire. The only leader adequate to usher in the future era of holistic healing of God’s creation and human flourishing is God himself. And God himself has come as that leader, in the flesh, in Jesus.
Jesus is humanity’s great leader and he must be trusted as such. If we trust him, we must also trust his words. It was he who said repeatedly that the kingdom is here. It has broken in.
The future reality of restored creation and human flourishing is upon us. It has been purchased in the righteous sacrifice of the God-man, Jesus. He gave his life in exchange for the horror that is the darkest parts of our individual and collective souls. For these reasons, then, we cannot limit redemption to the justification of the individual soul. Redemption applies to the whole of creation, because our great leader says it does. God reconciles all things, including this material world, to himself in Jesus (Colossians 1:20).
