The Seventh Day

Day of Rest

Key Bible Verse: Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law. (Luke 23:56)

Dig Deeper: Luke 23:50-56

For any Jew, Saturday is understood as the most holy, sacred day of the week. On the first Saturday, God himself had rested. Saturday is the high point of the Jewish calendar. And for the Christian, it is to be equally holy and sacred.

On [Holy] Saturday, Jesus lay in a tomb in the earth. Jesus, who was with the Father in the beginning, who is God through whom all things were made, including the earth, lay in the earth. The Creator lay dead in his own creation. The same God who rested at creation is again resting on the seventh day because of the hatred and anger of the world.

But to take it a step further, what was Holy Saturday like from the angle of those fearful, shaking, scared disciples who had just lost their Lord? As the Lord rested, they rested:

“The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body had been laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment” (Key Bible Verse, NIV, emphasis added). For the earliest Christians, as Jews, Saturday was their day of rest. Sunday became their day of resurrection.
